The reasons for journaling are deeply personal and vary widely. Some journal to improve their mental well-being, others to manage their thoughts, or to cultivate discipline and focus.
For me, it's primarily about revisiting the past to see what captured my interest during a specific time. (Not a surprise considering that my no 1 strength according to Gallup is Context).
My journal is a compilation of thoughts and favored readings. It lacks a set format or structure; structured journaling tools (whether apps or physical journals) didn't suit me - tried them all.
My approach to journaling is an unstructured stream of thoughts, ideas, and screenshots—many screenshots of things I read and enjoy. I gather my thoughts using Evernote and express them through Substack when inspired to write. Occasionally, I jot down to-do lists to organize my daily tasks.
If you're contemplating starting a journal, first consider your Why and let that guide your approach.
Speaking about screenshots, here are two screenshots I captured on journaling:
one at 11:18 on January 2, 2023. Regrettably, I cannot recall the source.

Whatever the reason, your journaling space offers a great deal of freedom. Embrace it and honor it.
I am writing this on the 1st of July; and July marks the Flamboyant season for me. It is a time when the beauty of these trees is in full bloom. It's a period of appreciation for the stunning display of nature.
Indeed, Mother Nature is the ultimate designer.
