6 months later, here I am.
Always difficult to start writing after such a long period of time. That’s why discipline is so important. It keeps you committed even when you don’t feel like doing what you know you should be doing. I was never a disciplined person; I was compliant which is worse.
Nevertheless, this post is not a pity party, it is about my need to write something.
6 months ago, during the holidays, I decided to take a challenge to study to become a coach. I chose the Solution Focused training offered by Erickson International. It was recommended by a friend I trust, as I know she is a great researcher and I trust the outcome of her research. I embarked on this journey without realizing that it would be such a transformational process for me. I was, of course, familiar with the concept of coaching as 15 years of working in the corporate world teaches you how to use all the buzz words. It also teaches you, if you want to listen, that there is a lot of truth lying behind such words, it is up to you to separate the music from the noise and to take whatever makes sense for you.
Some “intangible memorabilia” to share:
What you focus on grows - thought me to be mindful of what I am thinking and telling myself.
Global listening - listening beyond the words, listen for the emotions, for the gestures, for what is not being told.
Be curious, listen from the widest frame of awareness. Do not judge.
We all have our internal gremlins or inner saboteurs. They may show up as fears: fear of dreaming, fear of success, fear of disappointing others, fear of what others might be saying, impostor syndrome, etc. Learn about yours, notice how they make you feel. As Rick Carson was saying in his book - Taming your gremlin. A surprisingly simple method for getting out of your own way:
To simply notice is to be aware- to pay attention. Simply noticing has nothing to do with asking yourself why you are the way you are, although these answers may become obvious to you as you learn to simply notice you being you.
In taming your gremlin, it is important to simply notice how you are- not why you are how you are, but how you are. Thinking about and simply noticing are very different processes. Thinking about is the preferred activity of your gremlin. It’s a way of keeping you out of touch with the natural you.
Change is inevitable. You cannot change what you are not aware of.
Being. Doing. Having - A colleague learnt it while spending a year in the ashram of Sadhguru and she was kind enough to share it with us, as well. First you have to be the kind of person you are dreaming to become, then you have to make sure you are doing the things you wish to be doing and then you can wish to have what you want to have.
I enjoyed this program so much that I signed up for 2 more…details coming soon.
